The Silver Singularity

A novel in eight parts, Copyleft UBERMORGEN, 2024.

The manuscript weaves together the twelve members of the Society and their forked timelines, all radiating from the same fixed point: Genoa, 2001. Eight parts move through Wintergarden conspiracies, hemispheric jumps, silver-ceramic mysticism, the Genoa singularity itself, purity and isolation in Antarctic blood falls, Mediterranean royal intrigue, climate-tech ventures in Agbogbloshie, and a closing set of media interstitials: fake ads, a podcast, a deepfake-influencer post.

Timeline 5, 2018 · Busan

In the secretive city of Busan, a harbor-side dive bar, with its gauche graffiti-covered walls and sticky floors, reeks of salty sea air and stale beer. Here, amid the harmoniously hushed whispers of seasoned sailors and furtive glances of shadowy figures, the scene is set for a tale of illustrious intrigue, layered with subtext and steeped in the raw, ravishingly unvarnished essence of espionage.

Jin, our mixologist, has thick, glossy, heavy hair that falls into his face; he needs to fix his jaded jeans and faded band shirt, but this doesn't matter to Jin: he feels like more than merely a mixologist with perfectly worn-in clothes for his personal aesthetics. He is an artist, artisan, and cocktail genius. Every drink makes him feel like an enthrallingly embattled hero. Our mixologist, oblivious to the absurdity of his mission statement, meticulously concocts his drinks, each one a testament to his misplaced confidence.

What distinguishes Jin? Something about his demeanor feels off. Jin handles every cocktail so carefully it's almost off-putting. Spending hours developing his rare-element cocktails, he masterfully analyzes flavors and textures with the skill of a Michelin chef. Patrons, indulgent in their appreciation of his expertly crafted beverages and theatrical antics, continuously sip contentedly. But the winds of change are ever-looming.

One gloomy evening, a shadowy figure quietly slips into the tavern. Mr. K., beautifully clothed in a tailored black suit and intoxicatingly impenetrable shades, radiates an aura of enigmatic secrecy. Ordering Jin's current cocktail creation, he slowly starts questioning Jin.

'Ever consider your work's impact?'

Jin was filled with passion for mixology, believing his gift gave him the potential to change the world. Mr. K. gives Jin a black and silver business card and says, 'Continue your efforts.' And he leaves. 'Your existence has a deeper meaning.'

Jin feels his recognition is finally within reach. He's oblivious, once more, to the webs weaving under strings of poised power and complex corruptions, which he is now entangled in. Gradually, the fine line between friend and foe begins to fade, merging into a fog of furtive whispers and shadowy secrets. For Jin, this newly minted maze of deception and duplicity becomes a treacherous terrain, where trust turns tenuous and treachery thrives, all enshrouded in the ever-thickening haze of hidden agendas and veiled intentions.

Thickening tension threads through every gesture. Jin's concoctions conceal clandestine communications, crafted with care yet cloaked in irresponsible ignorance. Mr. K. continues his maneuvers, all while Jin remains blissfully unaware of the deep political machinations that swirl like smoke behind his lavish liquid inventions.

Jin sees himself as a charismatic creator, blissfully blind to the insidious intelligence operations that orbit his bar. His patrons, part of a sprawling spy network, pose as ordinary individuals, yet each sip reveals secrets, each glass a gateway to generously guarded intelligence information. In his unwitting artistry, Jin unveils new recipes and cryptic ciphers, keeping the world on edge with every effervescent elixir.

Upon receiving one of Jin's creations, spies scrutinize, analyze, and decode the drink's preparation, finding hidden messages within its carefully crafted contents. The narrative is knotted and clever, layered with irony and ingenuity, yet to Jin, still, it's all just a game of mixology. He imagines himself a maestro.

One evening, a notepad, left by a familiar yet forgettable face, catches Jin's eye. As he peruses its peculiar pages, he uncovers odd notes and symbols indubitably intertwined with his beloved beverage recipes. Realization hits with the subtlety of a well-shaken martini: Jin has been playing a part in a grand scheme all along.

'You heard the news?!' The words echo in his mind, but Jin, ever the optimist, embraces the role with enthusiasm, out of a sense of duty and misguided conviction. He dives headfirst into the plot, concocting extravagant and eccentric drinks with a defiant flourish. The dive bar, now, buzzing nightly, patrons sip and decipher, while Jin, grinning with self-satisfaction, thinks he's making a monumental difference, still blissfully clueless about the deadly game playing out in his shadow.

Days drift by, and Jin delves deeper into his work, spending countless hours blending bizarre ingredients, crafting increasingly outlandish libations. Fancying himself a true artist, unaware his canvas has transformed into a battlefield, his customers now flock to him from far and wide, lured by the legend of Jin's ingenious concoctions. The irony of Jin's obliviousness is a source of silent amusement among them. He prances around the bar, humming tunes, utterly ignorant of the operatives exchanging knowing glances, their respect for Jin's skills tinged with amusement at his antics.

A particularly perplexing order arrives, an intricate challenge Jin accepts with zeal. He spends hours perfecting the potion, and when he finally serves it, a spy disguised as a tawdry tourist takes a sip, smiles, and nods appreciatively. Jin beams, his chest swelling with pride. Jin, blithely blind to the truth, that the drink harbors a message of immense importance. The spy decodes it swiftly and departs, leaving Jin basking in his imagined glory.

As the night stretches on, Jin ponders Mr. K.'s cryptic counsel: 'Your life means more.' The words fill him with a sincere sense of purpose, as he fantasizes about being a hero, a mixologist on a mission. He doesn't, still, grasp the gravity of the situation, but that hardly matters to Jin. He's happy, and in his world, that's all that counts.

And so, Jin's life drifts on in a delightful delusion. He crafts his drinks, entertains his patrons, and revels in his self-imposed role as the star of the show. The dive bar remains a hive of hidden agendas, with spies decoding messages from Jin's masterful mixtures. Yet Jin remains the carefree and cheerful hero, concocting his extravagant cocktails, believing he's truly saving the world, when, in reality, he's merely stirring the pot of intrigue and espionage, all with a smile on his face.
